A telehealth\u00a0 program was implemented at seven ICUs at the center over the course of a year\u00a0 (Conn, <a title=\"Original Link: http:\/\/www.modernhealthcare.com\/article\/20110517\/NEWS\/305179987\/1153\" href=\"https:\/\/mtelehealth.com\/blog\/?NAL_gzhV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modern Healthcare<\/a>, 5\/17).<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>For the study, health care professionals working remotely monitored 6,290\u00a0 patients in the ICUs between April 2005 and September 2007.<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>The clinicians:<\/em><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Reviewed the care of individual patients;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Studied adherence to best practice guidelines;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Monitored responses to electronic alerts and alarms; and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Intervened and initiated treatments if response time was too long or if\u00a0 patients appeared unstable (HealthDay, 5\/16).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><em>Study Results<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Researchers found that after implementing the telehealth program:<\/em><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Hospital mortality rates dropped from 13.6% to 11.8%;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Patients\u2019 average length of hospital stay dropped from 13.3 days to 9.8\u00a0 days (Smith, <a title=\"Original Link: http:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/MeetingCoverage\/ATS\/26500\" href=\"https:\/\/mtelehealth.com\/blog\/?jyExsApN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MedPage Today<\/a>, 5\/16);<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>ICU mortality rates dropped from 10.7% to 8.6%; and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Patients\u2019 average length of stay in the ICU dropped from 6.4 days to 4.5\u00a0 days (HealthDay, 5\/16).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><em>In addition, the study found that after implementing the telehealth program,\u00a0 rates of adherence to best clinical practices increased and rates of\u00a0 preventable complications decreased (MedPage Today, 5\/16).<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Comments<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>Craig Lilly \u2014 lead author of the study, and vice chair of critical care\u00a0 operations and director of the electronic ICU program at UMass Memorial Medical\u00a0 Center \u2014 said the study is \u201ca very, very strong clear signal\u201d that\u00a0 telehealth technology is effective (Modern Healthcare,\u00a0 5\/17).<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>However, the researchers acknowledged that the telehealth program was\u00a0 implemented at a single institution and could be difficult to replicate\u00a0 (MedPage Today, 5\/16).<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><a title=\"Original Link: http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/content\/early\/2011\/05\/12\/jama.2011.716.extract\" href=\"https:\/\/mtelehealth.com\/blog\/?CQJQGNTt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a related editorial<\/a> also published in JAMA, Jeremy\u00a0 Kahn \u2014 an associate professor of critical care and health policy at the\u00a0 University of Pittsburgh \u2014 wrote that the study provides \u201cthe first convincing\u00a0 evidence that ICU telemedicine can be an effective complement to bedside care in\u00a0 some settings.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<div><em>However, he added that the study leaves unanswered two key questions:<\/em><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Whether telehealth can improve care in rural and remote settings; and<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Whether patients would benefit as much if facilities hired additional\u00a0 on-site staff as they would under more expensive electronic ICUs
