With the coronavirus pandemic, one innovation is at the forefront of transforming the healthcare landscape \u2013 telemedicine. &nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Since February 2020, telemedicine grew from less than 1% of primary care visits to nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2020\/07\/28\/hhs-issues-new-report-highlighting-dramatic-trends-in-medicare-beneficiary-telehealth-utilization-amid-covid-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">43.5%<\/a>&nbsp;in April 2020. With telemedicine\u2019s current trajectory and rapid adoption rate, it has the potential to disrupt and redefine the way health systems operate, deliver care and manage costs, setting the stage for a vastly different healthcare experience in the future.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>To illustrate the impact telemedicine will make in the future, we asked healthcare leaders and telemedicine providers from multiple specialties how they anticipate telemedicine reshaping the future healthcare landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Telemedicine will become a standard service offered across all care settings<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cWith patients becoming accustomed to the level of access telemedicine provides, I don\u2019t think we\u2019re ever going to be able to go back. The box is open,\u201d as predicted by Atlanta Neurologist, Dr. Jeffrey English.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Telemedicine has steadily grown over the past decade, but the pandemic skyrocketed its adoption. At its current trajectory, Forrester estimates that we\u2019ll see over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/go.forrester.com\/press-newsroom\/us-virtual-care-visits-to-soar-to-more-than-1-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 billion telemedicine<\/a>&nbsp;visits by the end of 2020.&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>President of VirtualMed Staff, Jack Williams, agrees, \u201cContinued growth in telehealth will be sustained for years to come. The common thread will be easier access to healthcare, which will generate confidence and drive growth.\u201d<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>2. Patients will choose providers, health systems, and hospitals based on telemedicine access&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cWhen patients feel their care is as good or better than a routine visit in person, all from the comfort of home, those same patients will no longer endure long wait times when it is avoidable,\u201d Williams explains. \u201cTelehealth will redefine patient expectations in all facets of quality healthcare.\u201d<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>With patients growing more accustomed to virtual care, health systems that lack telemedicine access will see decreased patient volumes from patients choosing providers that do offer telemedicine.&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>As Dr. English describes, \u201cnaysayers to disruptive technology\u201d will eventually have to add telemedicine to their patient care offering. As patients become more accustomed to the level of access telemedicine provides, hospitals that do not will see a clear decline.&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>3. Medical facilities that embrace telemedicine will see business and revenue growth&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cPatients are now requesting telemedicine. We\u2019ve seen volumes and business increase significantly this year because the competition was slower to adopt and offer telemedicine,\u201d reveals Dr. Tom Tuzel, a New York Psychiatrist.&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Hospitals have experienced a significant drop in revenue and patient volumes from COVID-19. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/guidesreports\/2020-05-05-hospitals-and-health-systems-face-unprecedented-financial-pressures-due#:~:text=The%20AHA%20estimates%20that%2C%20as,from%20March%20to%20June%202020.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AHA estimated<\/a>&nbsp;that U.S. Hospitals lost an estimated $202.6 billion from March to June, alone. Now and in the future, telemedicine is a revenue source that can safeguard against future troughs in healthcare.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>4. Telemedicine will become an efficient option for preventative care<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthcommunication\/toolstemplates\/entertainmented\/tips\/preventivehealth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the CDC<\/a>, chronic diseases that are avoidable through preventative care services account for 75% of the nation\u2019s healthcare spending. By offering more convenient access to follow-up care, specialists for faster diagnosis, and telemedicine treatment, hospitals will demonstrate fewer readmissions, complications, inpatient stays, and reduce higher cost treatments and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/healthpayerintelligence.com\/news\/how-preventive-healthcare-services-reduce-spending-for-payers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">services<\/a>.&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cThe goal of the future care is preventative and to make as many adjustments early on. How do you do that in a cost-effective, time-effective manner? With technology and telemedicine services,\u201d says Dr. Tuzel.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><strong>5. Access to specialists will become the norm, which will benefit hospital wait times<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cThere will be specialty centers where hospitals can call in and have 24\/7 access to a network of physicians who are experts in their specialty areas,\u201d explains Dr. English.&nbsp;<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>With immediate access to a wide range of physician specialists, these facilities can offer patients expanded access to focused care. In turn, this would improve the overall patient experience and reduce the cost of hiring full-time staff on-site.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cIn the past, doctors would tell a patient, \u2018You need to see a neurologist. Here\u2019s the number,\u201d Dr. English continues. \u201cNow, the doctor can say, \u2018You need to see a neurologist, let\u2019s connect with one now.\u2019\u201d<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>As technology innovations evolve healthcare and patient expectations, preparation becomes more critical.
