The cost of the program is $15 million but the savings will be approximately \u00a0$77 million&#8230;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>June 28, 2017 by\u00a0mHealth Intelligence<\/p>\n<p>At the Value-Based Care Summit in Chicago, Mercy Virtual President Randall S. Moore says providers should focus on money and lives saved with telemedicine and telehealth, not how much they&#8217;ll be reimbursed.<\/p>\n<p>To find value in a telehealth or mHealth program, healthcare providers must look not at how much money they\u2019ll make, but how much they\u2019ll save.<\/p>\n<p>At the St. Louis-based Mercy health system, this means sending home about 1,300 patients this year who would have died in the hospital were it not for the health system\u2019s telehealth services. With the elimination of some 127,000 bed days, this means the health system will save roughly $77 million in a program that costs about $15 million.<\/p>\n<p>Then factor in how those patients and their families feel.<\/p>\n<h4>Dig Deeper<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mhealthintelligence.com\/news\/for-telehealth-and-mhealth-value-based-care-takes-time-to-work-out\">For Telehealth and mHealth, Value-Based Care Takes Time to Work Out<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mhealthintelligence.com\/news\/using-mhealth-to-vault-the-barriers-to-value-based-care\">Using mHealth to Vault the Barriers to Value-Based Care<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mhealthintelligence.com\/features\/the-benefits-and-challenges-of-telehealth-for-specialists\">The Benefits and Challenges of Telehealth for Specialists<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those attending Xtelligent Media\u2019s Value-Based Care Summit were treated to a different view of healthcare this past week in Chicago. The two-day conference offered a glimpse of the industry\u2019s efforts to move away from a pay-for-procedure philosophy and toward an ecosystem that emphasizes outcomes and performance.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/mhealthintelligence.com\/news\/mercy-virtuals-president-talks-telemedicine-value-based-care\">Dr. Randall\u00a0S. Moore<\/a>, president of Mercy Virtual and the summit\u2019s closing keynote speaker, the challenge lies in moving away from the concept of being reimbursed for services rendered, and moving to a system that eliminates excessive and wasted payments.<\/p>\n<p>This means focusing on patient outcomes and factoring in health and wellness. And that\u2019s where telehealth and mHealth come into play.<\/p>\n<p>Moore, the head of a virtual care system that spans several states \u2013 Mercy\u2019s three-state network and three Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida health systems in a hub-and-spoke telemedicine network \u2013 calls it \u201cthinking outside the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health systems, he says, have to move away from so-called \u201csickness care\u201d and toward health + care, working inside and outside the walls of the hospital or doctor\u2019s office to promote wellness, intervene before a health crisis develops and maintain an ongoing relationship with patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if we don\u2019t do something different, things will come crashing down in a hard way,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p>Many health systems today, Moore says, can treat a patient who walks through their doors and send him or her home in less than five days. But then they\u2019ll just come back again when they\u2019re sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do we wait for people to show up in our emergency rooms?\u201d he asked. Why not, instead, \u201cextend what we do in the hospital into the home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore\u2019s goal is actually an evolution of the Mercy Virtual model, which debuted in 2015 with the opening of a four-story, $300 million virtual care center. At that time the center\u2019s goal was to target the \u201csickest of the sick\u201d \u2013 the 5 percent of patients responsible for roughly 50 percent of the nation\u2019s healthcare spend.<\/p>\n<p>Mercy Virtual went about that mission with <a href=\"https:\/\/mhealthintelligence.com\/news\/telemedicine-based-icu-care-boosts-outcomes-saves-millions\">a telemedicine platform that extended into iCUs and critical care areas<\/a>. Since that opening, the health system has contracted with Penn State Health, the University of North Carolina Health Care System and a hospital in Florida, and Moore says they\u2019re in talks with several more health systems.<\/p>\n<p>With that telemedicine model, Moore said, Mercy Virtual is looking to cut out about 20 percent of that 50 percent spend. On a national level, that amounts to about $3.5 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven in Washington, they call that real money,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, Moore sees virtual care as another word for healthcare, and Mercy Virtual as a component of all of the health system\u2019s services, not just critical and ICU care. He wants every department of Mercy to have a virtual health strategy, so that all patients can benefit from programs that reach out beyond the hospital to improve outcomes and reduce costs.<\/p>\n<p>For a health system that derives some 80 percent of its revenues from the hospital, a plan that seeks to cut its hospitalizations in half in five years, that journey won\u2019t be easy. And that\u2019s where Moore says healthcare providers have to change their thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, stop thinking about healthcare only in the hospital or doctor\u2019s office. And instead of focusing on money earned, focus on money \u2013 and lives \u2013 saved.
