Dr. Miltie – The Story
Milton James Poulshock (“Dr. Miltie”) grew up in the Olney section of Philadelphia. His Father, Irving, worked at the local hardware store while his Mother, Edith, tended to their home. Educated at Olney High School, where he met his future wife, Rosie, he graduated and attended Penn State University, focused on a career in healthcare.
Unfortunately, paying for college and, eventually, medical school, did not come easy. He worked countless jobs, day and night, before and after studying, before and after exams, including driving a Good Humor Ice Cream truck and calling television viewers to inquire about what they watched on TV for the Nielsen Ratings. Even after hard economic times forced the hardware store to let go of his Father, he persevered, pressed forward, worked harder, and supported his loving parents.
After he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy (now the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, PCOM) on June 11, 1961, he opened his family medical practice in the basement of a home on Rising Sun Avenue in the Lawndale section of Philadelphia. From day one, he took care of patients from all walks of life, blue collar, white collar, all income levels, races, creeds, colors, ethnicities, and religions. He never turned away a single patient, with money or without, and worked endless days to take care of his patients, newborn children at home, and a growing family.
As a family medical practitioner in the 1960s, he followed the traditions of a dedicated Provider, offering house calls for his elderly, disabled, and homebound patients. He traveled with his magical little black ”doctor’s” bag, and stethoscope around his neck, to care for those who may have simply gone without care otherwise. He ALWAYS put a smile on the faces of the patients he encountered.
Throughout his nearly 30 years of practice, he continued that walk up the cement path and the steps to the front door of a patient’s home to provide the care that they needed, along with a joke and a smile. In fact, many of the patients simply looked forward to just the joke, a smile, and a FRIEND. The house calls continued, regardless of the patient, the location, or the dwindling and, eventually, nonexistent payments for his dedicated, selfless service, and humanity. There was nothing that stopped him from taking care of his patients, four generations worth, until his passing on May 11, 1990, at the young age of 53.
The practice, kindness, care, and tradition, continued for another 30 years with Milton’s son, Andrew Poulshock (“Dr. Andy”), another PCOM graduate. Unfortunately, with the March 5, 2023, passing of Dr. Andy, shortly before his 60th birthday, the legacy of care, compassion, and kindness went silent.

Milton and Andrew Poulshock did every day of their working lives.
